For many reasons I have always found inland Spain more attractive than the summery coastal towns and islands. Madrid didn’t always stand out to me as a must visit place until recently. Apart from it being the capital city, I didn’t know much about it and was more interested in Barcelona.<br /> I was wrong though and in the following post I will explain why and also explain why you should watch the video towards the bottom of the page and enter the accompanying competition to win a weekend break in Madrid.<br /> I did not realise, for instance, how historical Madrid was, but the earliest recorded history of Madrid states that it existed as far back as 865 AD. The citation includes Emir Muhammad I commissioning a fortress to be built in a town called Mayrit. It turns out that Mayrit was the name given for the centre of the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs, which eventually became Madrid when Spanish king Phillip II establish his royal court.<br /> Although only a few remnants of that historic time remain in the city, there is still enough for a visual feast and along with the older buildings there are also those that originate from the 18th and 19th century and the Hapsburg Dynasty to marvel at. When I researched Madrid I discovered that the 1980’s were a pivotal time for the city and if I won the competition I would make sure that I visited the Malasaña district. This area is where the movida madrileña began, an underground and progressive movement that changed Madrid’s reputation and image forever.<br /> I also learned from my research that Madrid has an authentic piece of Egypt. It is amazing to think that The Templo de Debod is actually a real Egyptian funeral monument that was first erected in Egypt. It was taken piece by piece and re-erected in its new home overlooking the beautiful rural area of Madrid.<br /> As well as the chance to marvel at something so seemingly out of place that it fits, I have also heard that there is no better place to experience the sun setting over the city than from the Templo in La Casa de Campo.<br /> If that has not enticed you to want to visit the historical and cultural Spanish city then perhaps the following video will. And what’s not to love. Its pristine coastline is perfect for walking, swimming, or simply chilling out. The cliffs leading to the beach are a haven for parasailors, and the afternoon breeze is great for windsurfing or kiteboarding.<br /> So, do yourself a favor, if you are in Israel for summer, take some time to do a bit of exploring. A ticket, for example, allows the climb on top of Rockefeller Centre and to enter MOMA museum.
